Wallflowers, although not native to England, are quintessentially an English flower. They are easy to grow perennial and does best in dry soils with very good drainage. They are often grown successfully in loose wall mortar, hence the vernacular name. Their flowers range in colour from bright yellow through red to purple and almost black. Most garden wallflower cultivars are derived from E. cheiri, from southern Europe. I grow many on the wall in front of the house. This one is a new cultivar that produces more compact flowers.
