This Clematis flowers from the late spring until October. If deadheading the flowers is practiced it flowers more or less continually. Otherwise it flowers more in spurts and stops. The deep purple to red adds welcome colour to the garden for a long time. The plant appears completely dead and lifeless in the winter and the stems are thin and easily snapped, but in the spring it sprouts new growth and flower buds. Slugs and snails do like the flowers.
