Mixing the double nigra with the double white variety produces a great spectacle that grows to a height of 6 feet. The double varieties seems to be more tender and difficult to propagate from year to year, but as it can reach this height in one year and with rich soil it is easy to replace. Staking is necessary as high winds will blow them over. This is a useful plant for the back border, but it does like a sunny position. It dies down to a stump in winter and re-shoots in the spring.
