Description

There are several beetles that eat the tree below the bark. Some carry diseases from one plant to the next. One of the most famous is Scolytus scolytus The elm Bark beetle. Many beetles eat channels below the bark where the xylem and phloem cells (the living part of a tree) are and interrupt the flow of nutrients around the tree. This eventually kills the tree. Beetles often prefer to attack weakened plants that have been invaded by other diseases, fungus or bacteria. Picture from Wikimedia Commons.

Control

The best control is by pruning out and burning affected branches and keep trees growing healthily by preventing fungal attack. For example pruning to enable air flow through the tree. Spraying is usually ineffective as the beetle is not touched by the insecticide. Perhaps a systemic insecticide may work.
