Description

Gall Wasps is the name given to more than 1200 insects of many genus and species of the suborder Apocrita, family Cynipidae. These wasps usually have the typical thin waist between the thorax and abdomen. When the larvae of these wasps bite and causes damage the plant responds by producing a gall, inside of which the larvae develops protected from its enemies. Most gall wasp are specific to one plant, for example, the Oak Apple Gall Wasps only lay their eggs on the leaves of oak trees and the Citrus Gall Wasp only attack Citrus trees. Most species of gall wasps attack specific tissues of the host plant, which in turn form galls on roots, stems, twigs, leaves, buds, or flowers where the wasp has injured the plant. Some adult wasps emerge from the gall in summer to mate. Some wasps live in the soil surrounding the plant or tree. Usually these galls do not harm the tree or plant in any significant way apart from appearance, but if they are too numerous they can weaken the tree eventually causing other organisms to kill it. Control

Remove all infected stems by cutting back to well behind the galls before the end of summer and burn the prunings. This will prevent the young wasps from emerging and preventing another generation.
Hang sticky traps in the infected tree to attract and trap adult wasps.
There are Biological control predators of these insects that can be used. Keeping the soil around the tree in good health by perhaps sterilisation my also help prevent the attack in the first place.
