Caused By:-     Scale insect Eriococcus coriaceus

Eucalyptus Gumtree scale is a sap sucking insect that may have already been introduced to the UK. The female is attached on the stem and the male can move and fly. They infest all parts of the tree and cluster together in colonies. Ants are commonly attracted to the scale insect to collect honeydew secreted by this scale. The ants may protect the scale from predation in order to collect the secretions.

In other countries Biological control has proved somewhat successful.
Spraying with some insecticides is usually ineffective as they are protected by their leathery covering.
In winter a tar wash or insecticidal Or horticultural oil wash may help kill off any overwintering eggs or scale.
